THETA Poker - Texas Hold 'Em App Reviews

Strongest Holdem for iPhone

Ive tried most or all of the other Holdem games for the iPhone, and I believe this one plays the strongest, most human-like game. The apps author is friendly and responsive and keeps making it better and better. It may not be the least expensive game app, but I think its well worth the price if youre into Holdem (ring games or tournaments). As the months have passed, it remains the only game-type app on my iPod touch that I use regularly.

Way to easy

I like to play low stakes online poker. I have little patience and always lose. Yet in this game I am unbeatable.

The best iPhone poker app by far

Ive played several of the iPhone poker apps and this is far and away the best one. It has a ton of customization features, including number of players so you can play MTTs and STTs, cash games, and Shootouts, blind level increase speed (for the "Turbo" junkies), the actual in-game speed and animations can be tweaked for super-speedy play, and Theta Poker can be played in Portrait or Landscape with a continuous overhead view. You can gear the game to how you WANT to play. The AI is pretty good, though I will say I beat it often on the Expert level. There really is no substitution for play against real people, but this is a great time-occupier and quite good practice. My only requests: Complete customization of the blind levels as opposed to only "Very Small" to "Very Large" and Id love to see a Career Mode!

Showdowns

Incredible number of straights, flushes, full boats on all-in showdowns, often completed on the river. Hopefully the next update will fix that. Other than that, its a real pissah.

Horrible AI do not buy

The AI is a joke. Example; with 4 people left the AI will go all in with a 5h and 8c then catch a set with the 5 on the flop. This happenes ALL this time! The computer gets stupid unrealalistic cards and bets accordingly. If u want to practice against a rigged game this is for you but if you r looking for a real poker game take a pass on this

Rigged schmigged

My biggest complaint so far is that the graphics/visuals leave a lot to be desired. However, the Apple Holdem app goes way beyond overkill in that regard, at the expense of other aspects, while Theta seems to be more of a poker players app, for players, by players, with a lot of customizations and better built-in documention/help. At first I had a real tough time placing in top 3 in tournament mode, while I could so often in the Apple game. Was I learning poor habits? Lately, however, Im winning and cashing fairly often in expert/tournament mode--maybe a little lucky streak--but also busting out several times, too. The point is, I certainly have not noticed any questionable or bogus play by the computer AI at all, although I may have sensed some with the Apple app, as well as some unbelievably stupid play.

Support Great Apps and vendors

This app is the best, hands down... and I emailed support twice, both times they were all over it... Very awesome value on this one! -Wx2junior

A Poker Players Poker Game

Great UI. Great AI. Very Customizable. This app has definitely improved my game, and is my go-to app whenever I have a little time to kill. Some areas where Id like to see improvement are below: - AI seems too tight. Its easy to exploit by making small raises with trash hands in any position. AI doesnt seem to give enough consideration to pot odds when folding to small bets. This also applies to "loose" AI opponents, who also seem pretty tight. - AI check-raise bluffs and limp-reraise bluffs too often, and doesnt make these moves for value often enough. Easy to exploit by playing back with any reasonable hand. - It would be nice to see adaptable AI strategy, that will sometimes play back at the human player if the player is too aggressive against them. - The UI needs a "lock" feature that prevents acceleromoter-based rotation if turned on. That would make it easier to play while reclining or lying down. Please note that this application still gets five stars, for being so far ahead of the rest of the field in gameplay and challenge level!

Great poker app!

What I wanted to find was a good AI I could play against to help me practice cash game and tournament play. The short of it is this game rocks. Ive tried some other poker apps but their AIs were way too easy. Youll love all the options. I changed the computer skill to expert mode, changed players per table to nine, changed animation speed to instant deal, changed speed after fold to skip to end, changed message delay to very short, and changed the card look. You can run the game in landscape or portraight mode. I use one hand in portraight mode. This apps has never crashed on me and its easy and fast to play. Its pretty hard in expert mode. Im a better than average poker player because of how well I know odds of the cards in various scenarios. I play pretty conservative though and my friends dont like how I play since its so different from them. In cash games I usually win a little bit and I play every week. I had one of my friends I mentioned play this game and he loved it. I would like an even tougher AI. It would be cool if it could learn your style of play or you could configure it. For me, the tournament play seems closer to reality. The cash games are a bit less realistic for me (I win too much). I think this is because of my stye of play. I get called and pushed more than my friends would so I win more.

Theta Poker 1.9.2 - Review

All in all, this is probably the best Holdem game on the AppStore, Im actually surprised its not reviewed more. Opponents (AI) is very good, and one of the most realistic games you can get on your Iphone/Ipod Touch. Its a tad expensive ($4.99), but the author is always improving (infact hes working on 2.0 now). Setting to Expert is a real challenge, as you get opponents that raise when they shouldnt, bluff, and even try to steal pots. Just like folks in real life! You get what you pay for with this app, buy it!

Bummed

Not happy! If Id seen it first, would not have spent the $5. Hope the 2.0 is better!

Don

After reading the reviews for most of the poker games available here, this one seemed to have the best reviews and was rated pretty well. The other poker games were criticized for the AI being too predictable or unrealistic, so I bought this version. Although I do enjoy the simplicity of the layout of the game, the AI are absolutely horrendous. You can literally buy the pot every hand and the computer NEVER bluffs. It is so easy to tell what the computers hands are that I was able to win literally every hand that I went in for. If this game had held my attention for more than 5 minutes, I would have been able to easily beat the tourney. I have been playing Red Dead Redemption for PS3 which has brilliant AIs for the poker game and this game is just a piece of trash comparatively. My faith in iTouch poker is running short. Dont buy this game unless you are a poker newb who goes all in all of the time or are in middle school.

Not worth the money

Calling anything to do with this game AI is a serious overstatement. Predictable betting patterns and poor card distribution make this one of my worst purchases.

Easily exploited

Full proof plan to beat expert easily, and your hand doesnt matter! If first to enter the pot, raise to 2.5 times the blind. Everyone will fold 75% of the time. If raised, fold. If called, bet on the flop (about 1/2 the pot) if no one else bets. Dont commit any more chips after that. Sure, a few times youll get reraised with junk, but youll win the blinds enough so it wont matter. The computer will never get tired of you stealing the blinds. If someone else limps or raises pre-flop, fold. Works best with antes. Its so easy, it can actually harm your game with humans.

Awesome game

Simple graphics, but very good AI (dont forget to set to Expert in preferences!)

Terrible

That $5 was the worst bet Ive made in 10 years.
